Discarding the legacy codebase entirely and redeveloping the application from scratch utilizing modern, cloud-native frameworks and continuous delivery practices. This is the recommended path when the original application architecture can no longer support the functionality or speed the business demands.

Retiring the custom legacy system altogether and migrating to a modern Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) alternative. This shifts your focus entirely away from software maintenance to consumption, allowing internal teams to focus on differentiation rather than commodity upkeep, though you accept the trade-off of being limited to the vendor’s standard functionality.

Challenging the Shortcut: The Limits of IT Cost Savings

When an organization faces the end of a physical data center lease or hardware reaches its end-of-life, opting to Rehost or Replatform serves a valid, tactical purpose. CIOs can be forgiven for seeking the quick win of a basic lift-and-shift: It can be done quickly and removes the immediate burden of managing physical infrastructure. At the same time, it requires almost zero buy-in from business stakeholders and sidesteps the expense of a full-scale IT transformation.

But treating this emergency exit as a final destination is where the trouble begins. Let’s ask a fundamental reflective question:

If it takes your development team three months to deploy a new feature on-premises, why would moving that exact same unoptimized code to someone else’s data center make it any faster?

Without a cloud-native design, those legacy applications run continuously, consuming resources inefficiently and driving up unexpected infrastructure costs. This practice is highly recommended to keep unplanned cost fluctuations under control, and if done well, you might achieve optimizations within your IT department.
